Okay, so I was invited to the Battlefield 3 alpha test and at first I was really excited. Battlefield has by far been my favorite multiplayer game since I first played Battlefield 1942. So you could imagine how happy I was to receive an email from EA inviting me to play the latest game of the series. A game which was promised to be a true sequel to Battlefield 2. A game which promised to return to being the PC centric series I fell in love with. A promise which I'm starting to realize to be empty.
I have been playing the alpha all weekend, doing what is supposed to be done in the alpha stage of a game. Play the shit out of it and break it. Test it. But it isn't the glitches, or the small things that are bothering me. It is the core gameplay that WILL NOT be tweaked at all this late in development that has me worried. Battlefield has always been about teamwork and strategy. The pace was always slow and tactiful(thats right... Im so upset i made up a word), and the maps were always large and unique. All of that changed with the Bad Company spin off that was more Console focused. I enjoyed Bad Company 1 and 2, but that was because I never considered them to be true battlefield games. They were good for what they were. 2 games made to compete with Call of Duty on consoles.
Now with Battlefield 3 just 3 months away from launch... the gameplay is a lot more reminiscent to Bad Company 2 than it is to Battlefield 2. Hell... It is more like Call of Duty than Battlefield 2. Gone are the Commander roles, large maps, and even slow movement (Soldiers are running nearly as fast as cars drove in BF2). Replaced with small, linear maps, and nonexistent communication. Teamwork doesn't exist and its just a mad uncoordinated CoD like shoot out.
Now to be fair the only mode available in the alpha is Rush. There is only one map available as well. So I am still holding my breath. But the speed of the game is way to fast and the damage the guns do is ridiculous. The lack of teamwork makes the game more like CoD and they have this new feature called 3D spotting where if you press "Q" while your cross hair is anywhere near an enemy than you can see an icon above his head that follows him around. This means even if someone is behind a bush. If you press Q you can see him. So all people do is constantly press Q.
This game is just a watered down version of what was once a great series on the PC. It is amazing how badly CoD has destroyed the FPS genre. Did I mention regenerating health? Seriously I am so very disappointed. My only hope is that Conquest mode... the mode that makes Battlefield the game it should be redeems all of these faults. I am buying this game when it is released... I already pre-ordered... But it is not looking to be Battlefield 3. As of this moment it is most certainly Battlefield Bad Company 3...
I really needed to vent this out. If I had posted this in the forums of the alpha I would have a lot of veterans agree with me. However the majority of alpha testers who only really know Bad Company flame the hell out of people. Its pathetic.
