The heat was exhausting, and already the Oasis had received large quantities of his saliva from the time he spent drinking out of it. The Children has gathered around him, petting him and giving him affection, but this was all short lived. He strayed from the older Gerudo, afraid they might take arms against him, and he was not looking for a confrontation. Slipping away and moving about, he eventually found his way to the focal point of his journey.
Groaning softly, he tightened his jaw on the white bag which hung from his mouth. It was his bag, the one he took from his dead Masters house before leaving. The Monster, a dog of rarity, was scoping out his target. Although unable to speak the human language, it was not dumb or uneducated. If anything it was smarter than the average human about a large quantity of subjects. Hunting was his specialty, and not just hunting monsters, no, hunting items was also a favor of his.
As he scoped out the fortress, he eventually made his move. Slipping into it was not an easy task, however when a traveling Gerudo came to enter, he took his chances. Luckily, his swift, silent paws proved invaluable. "....Grrgh..." He moaned silently, still somewhat thirsty. He was used to hot weather, and the plains around the desert was his race's natural home. Even so, most had been hunted to extinction long ago, and few who did not know of his race would most likely be unaware of their intelligence.
Shifting from shadow to shadow, he came upon a small stash of casual rupee's in the fortification. Moving in, he began using his mouth to bury the rupees deep in the bag. As he worked however, a small sound reached his ears, and they perked up immediately. Mabari could hear the small pitter patter of walking feet, approaching his location.

Merik was walking through the halls reading a few reports from his spies and it was only the fact that his head was angled down that he even noticed the dog in the hall. The Gerudo froze in his tracks and lowered his papers, more than a little taken aback by the random dog with the white bag in it's paws.
"Well I'll be damned...how did you get in here? You can't belong to anyone here because I would have been told about a big wolf-hound the minute you were brought in." he said quietly as he slowly walked forward, not wanting to spook the animal off. "So are you just a random stray, or do you belong to one of the traders and just happened to find your way into the Fortress?"

As the figure came into view, the dog lifted the bag with his mouth, immediately letting out a small, minuscule growl as the hair raised on his back, attempting to ward off the man. He inched forth slowly, and spoke to the dog, asking it a simple question. As he asked if Mabari had simply come in as a traders dog or something of the sort, he dropped the bag and simply stood, his hair lowering and his stance lessening. He was practically cornered anyway, and the only safe way out was through the hall past Merik.
"...."
Obviously the dog did not speak, but simply looked at Merik with curiosity as a couple of rupees fell forth from the white bag which clearly stated his name, Mabari, on the top. He wore no collar, not since the passing of his old master. He probably never would again, as it symbolized enslavement to Mabari. A master for him was a friend, not an owner. Whimpering at his last statement, the dog looked to the rupees, boldly notifying the Gerudo male of his intentions.

Merik couldn't help but start laughing as the dog dropped the bag and a few rupees fell from it.
"The one creature in all of Hyrule that would actually considering trying to rob me is a dog, that certainly says a lot about my enemies..." he said once his laughter had subsided as he took a look at the name on the bag. "Mabari huh...? Well keep those rupees for being ballsy enough to try and take them Mabari. Considering you came in from the desert I suppose you wouldn't say no to some water huh?"

Mabari caught on quick; this male was no doubt the King of Gerudo, and he was...offering him water? Mabari tilted his head and stared at Merik with curiosity. The Dog snuck into the fortress and attempted to steal his treasures, and he gets offered water. Stepping forth cautiosly, his tail slowly wagged, initiating a yes.
"....Ruff."

"Figured as much, well then gather up your much deserved reward and I'll take you down to the kitchens. We'll get you some water, maybe a snack." Merik said as he waited for the dog to gather up it's bag before leading the way to the kitchens.
The dog was clearly smart, it hadn't accidently snuck into his fortress and put his rupees into a bag afterall. And even if he couldn't figure out a use for the him, one of his cousins might like a new pet guardian...well maybe not Ruma, she might run tests on Mabari.
Once in the kitchens he quickly filled a bowl with water and set about looking for some meat.

Grabbing the bag, Mabari followed Merik down to the Kitchen where he kept a watchful eye the entire time. Once there, he dropped the bag on the side of the table and peered around. On occasions he wondered if he should use a dagger in his mouth, to maximize his abilities.
Staring at Merik, he barked at the smell of food that rolled from the Kitchen. If Merik had the ability to link telepathically to Mabari, that would be most fortunate.

Merik was having similar thoughts as he sat down the water and meat for Mabari. As the dog ate, the King began pulling items out of his pockets as he dug around for one specific...FOUND IT.
He pulled out a blue crystal wrapped in rope that matched the one he wore around his own neck. He held both up for the dog to see as he spoke.
"Mabari, I would like to test a theory I have; this little stone allows mental communication with my crew wherever they are in the world. You are clearly a very intelligent dog and I think this might just allow us to communicate a little easier. I just need you to hold still a second so I can tie this on you and it should work." he said as he untied the cords and slowly approached the dog.

As the food and water was placed down, the dog began to eat slowly with a unique refiness. Enlightened by the man's kindness, he found a sense of honesty and intelligence that existed in his previous Master. They were very much alike, however Merik was much more worn to battle and war. Mabari respected this. As Merik spoke he looked up, gazing at the crystal with a curios look.
Stepping forth, he stood still and lifted his head, allowing Merik to move forth and tie the crystal around his neck. As soon as the Crystal reached touched his body, he could feel the connection between him and Merik mentally. His whole life had plagued him with helplessness, unable to communicate his thoughts with those of equal intelligence aside from his own race.
I feel the mental barrier being forged....Merik Dragmire, King of Gerudo? As you figured, I am Mabari.
He wasn't sure if it was actually working though...

"Excellent, it worked exactly as I thought it would." Merik said with a smirk as he picked up the dog's thoughts in his mind. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance Mabari, welcome to my kingdom of seemingly endless sand."
He walked around the table and pulled up a chair across from the dog.
"So what brings you to my little slice of paradise?"

The dog wagged his tail, his thoughts coursing through his mind with energetic happiness. This is amazing. The first time I've been able to communicate with a Human. Pure genuis.... As Merik asked the question, Mabari refocussed himself and looked up, nodding to initiate the Kings greeting.
Why, to steal from you of course. Rupees buy food, and hunting has become rather dull lately. Sneaking in while a Gerudo came through the gates was rather easy, and once in no one really thought much of me. My old master, a Lumberjack from Faron Woods, passed away some time ago. Since then I've simply stolen from the wealthy.
Mabari held no shame in his words, for to him, thievery was a way of life, a skill, a talent, and a worthwhile job. While Prideful and Loyal, and typically considerate and upstanding, to him it was simply a way of employment.

"You do what you need to survive without regret." Merik said with a nod at Mabari's words. "You are certainly among friends in that respect. Though I'm sure you knew that before you came here...you're practically a Gerudo in your own right."
He was quiet for a short time as he thought pointless little thoughts.
"So since your master died you've just been surviving? Quite a shame how many have fallen onto that path...what if I told you that I could help you stop surviving and start living; what would you think of that my furry friend?"

He nodded, concurring with Merik in all respects. Mabari's nature and path was similar to a Gerudo, and at the same time his race was native to the Plains and Desert, perhaps impacting his nature to resort to their way of life when all else had failed. When Mabari was prompted with a question of if he would rather be living then simply surviving, he was iI intrigued. Few came to the Gerudo Fortress and was offered such words; the dog must of sparked an interest in the Man.
If you mean to become my master, then allow me to enlighten you. My Master recognized my intelligence and was more of a friend in most regards. Many have tried to dictate me as a mere dog, all have fallen. He paused, taking a drink of water and then returned to Merik, looking him in the eyes. Not that I could or would attempt to strike down the King of Gerudo's, but you get the point. Now, if you are offering a place for me to set allegiance and become a friend, and finally have a home here, then I could not decline. You've given me a gift to communicate, something that has plagued me my whole life. I owe you quite a bit. So, enlighten me, for I show interest.

"Not necessarily a home here...well not all the time anyway. You see Mabari I am not only the King of the Gerudo, I am also the King of Pirates and I am always looking for new people to join with us. There is danger but no more than robbing people here on land... well actually I guess drowning is a omnipresent danger you wouldn't really encounter here... anyway there is always a meal waiting, though after a few weeks at sea it might not be the best meal, and it does take a lot of work to keep a ship afloat but the payoffs are certainly worth all the trouble." Merik replied once the dog had said his piece, pausing to allow his new friend the chance to consider that before continuing on.
"Now I won't lie to you on this matter: I am friends with many on my crew, not all but quite a few. I've fought both enemies and elements alongside them, worked together to keep our shared home in one piece and sailing, and I've shared in the joys and sorrows of both victory and defeat. But one thing that all understand is that I am the captain, I give the orders and I expect them to be followed. You are an exceptionally intelligent creature and I won't treat you any more or any less than the other men and women that join me on the seas. And I'll assure you right now, I don't give any order that I wouldn't obey myself if the need arose.
Does this arrangement appeal to you?"

Mabari considered it and listened to Merik without interjection. After a moment of silence, he bent over and took another drink of water, amused at the situation he had placed himself in. He came to steal, and he was about to be recruited into a group of thieves. How great was this...
To be treated equally is all I ask. As long as that is shown true, I will follow any orders and gladly join you. Out of curiosity, why introduce me to this Merik? To your...crew?

"I tend to take in strays: Zora, Goron, Gerudo, Hylian, Hybrid, thieves, warriors, sorcerers, scholars, scientists. All the groups have outcasts and I take those outcasts and bring them together under my banner...granted none of them has ever been an overly intelligent wolf-hound before but there is a first time for everything." Merik said with a short laugh as he started contemplating where to place Mabari on the ship.
"We'll need to figure out a good place for you on the crew but I'm sure something will prove to be a good match."

Mabari had heard of the Gerudo Kings Pirate Crew before, but he had no idea that it was so diverse. The King was a very open minded person, that was evident to the dog. As he openly questioned himself as to where he should be placed within the crew, Mabari could not help but find the same confusion setting in upon him. He couldn't really clean, he couldn't work the mast or anything of the such....
Hm...I see. I'll go wherever you need me. My senses are much higher than any human, I can fight, and obviously steal. I don't really see where you could place me either. I am a profficient tracker and hunter however.
[/i] He was not trying to boast, and most certainly couldn't. Yes, he had abilities that the others of his crew most likely did not, making him unique, but the fact was that he had very little he assumed he could do on a boat. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

"Perhaps we'll set you up on the shore parties to forage for supplies and to help with finding hidden treasures..." Merik said, still not completely sure where he'd place Mabari in the crew.
"I'm sure that given a little time we'll find a place that'll fit right for you. Until then you can hang around the Fortress or head back out into the wider world; I'll contact you before the Defiant sets sail so you'll have time to get back if you head out."

He nodded, finishing his food and water as he listened to Merik. He had come to steal riches from a King, and instead was employed into his forces and given the trust of his victim. Respect had been gained ten fold by Merik, as Mabari now saw a man who held no racial barriers accountable in his land. Equality was what Mabari wished, and by the grace of the Gods he had been given it.
Very well. It has been a pleasure Captain Dragmire. I will see you soon.
With that, he turned, grabbed the small quantity of rupee's, and walked off to explore the Fortress and perhaps return to his travels until the ship began its next adventure.

Merik nodded as Mabari took off, quickly sending off a message to his guards not to worry if they saw the dog wandering around.
"More and more of us everyday... for being one of the most hated unknowns in Hyrule I've certainly got quite a following." he muttered to himself with a laugh as he dug out his reports once more and resumed his reading.
